Brent Leavins was born
on August 30th, 1953 in the town of
Dinsmore, Saskatchewan. Leavins enjoyed
many sports while growing up but hockey
was his favorite. Brent would sneak out
of the house as a child to skate on the
rink even when it was closed. He played
his entire minor hockey in Dinsmore, and
was coached by his father, Rollie.
In the summer of 1969,
Brent was listed with the Swift Current
Broncos. That fall Brent was sent to
Unity to play for the Unity Canucks, the
Broncos farm team. Brent went on to win
the team's Most Valuable Player and Top
Scorer Awards that season. After an
outstanding year in Unity, Brent was
brought up to play for the Swift Current
Broncos of the WCHL. Brent made an
immediate impact with the team. In his
rookie year Brent played left wing and
had a successful season, scoring 22
goals and adding 23 assists.
Brent's second season
with the Broncos was another successful
campaign. He scored 35 times and had 37
assists during the 1971-72 season with
the Broncos. That year Brent was
selected to play for the WCHL Eastern
All-Star Team. Brent was also the
recipient of the team 3-Star Award that
year.
In Brent's final season
with the Broncos he was named captain of
the team. Brent improved his goal and
assist totals and by the end of the
season he had broke the Broncos Single
Season Goal Scoring points with 52 goals
and 53 assists, for a total of 105
points. Again, Brent was selected to
play in the WCHL All-Star game. Brent's
final season with the Broncos ended in
fine fashion, as he won three awards at
the Team Award Night (Most Valuable
Player, Top Scorer, & Most Points
for the 3-Star Selection).
In the spring of 1973,
Brent was eligible for the NHL entry
draft, where he was selected in the
second round, 27th overall by the
Philadelphia Flyers. The Vancouver
Blazer of the World Hockey League also
drafted Brent in the second round, 21st
overall. Brent signed with the Flyers
and went to their training camp in
September. He had a good camp but was
assigned to their farm team in Richmond,
Virginia. Brent was leading the team in
scoring when on November 13, 1973 he was
involved in an unfortunate car accident
that left him with a shattered ankle,
essentially ending his hockey
career.
Unfortunately Brent was
never able to fulfill his childhood
dream of playing in the NHL because of
the accident. However, although he could
no longer play hockey, he still involved
himself with the game. Brent chose to
coach young hockey players and coached
in Elrose from 1976 to 1995.
Brent was a popular
player among his teammates and had a
very successful career with the Swift
Current Broncos. His accomplishments
with the team have earned him a
well-deserved place in the Swift Current
Broncos Hall of Fame.
