Broncos Still Winless Against Blades

17-Feb-12

The Swift Current Broncos dropped a 7-3 decision to the Saskatoon Blades at the Credit Union Centre in the first end of their home-and-home series Friday night.  Special teams would be a big factor in the final score as four of the ten goals were tallied on the man advantage.

Defenceman Darren Dietz would open the scoring five minutes in on the man advantage to put the Blades on the board.  With under a minute left in the first period Matej Stransky would follow suit making it a 2-0 contest with his 32nd of the season also on the power play.

A Tripping call to Chris Collins early into the second frame would give the Broncos the chance to put their third ranked power play into effect.  Coda Gordon would capitalize on the man advantage tipping one past netminder Andrey Makarov and cutting into the Blades lead.  Just over two minutes later Brett Stovin would respond for Saskatoon with his 10th of the season.  Around the 13 minute mark of the period Levi Bews would cut into the Blades once more with his sixth of the season, but less than a minute later Dietz would bring the Blades lead back up to two with a single of his own.  In the final minutes of the second frame Gordon would follow through off of a feed from Dillon Heatherington to make it a 4-3 contest with his second of the evening.  Unfortunately, back-to-back singles by Dietz would force the Broncos to trail 6-3 as they headed into the third period.

Austin Smith would start the third period replacing netminder Jon Groenheyde between the posts.  But, Travis McEvoy would seal the deal with a marker early in to make it a 7-3 final.

Shots were relatively even with the Blades having a slight edge outshooting the Broncos 45-44.  On the man advantage the Broncos went 1/4.

UP NEXT: The Broncos return to the Credit Union iPlex for the tail-end of their home-and-home series with the Blades tomorrow night.  Then, they host the Moose Jaw Warriors on Monday with a special 2PM puck drop.
